Caminito del Rey Difficulty and Rules
How hard the Caminito del Rey is, 7.7 km one way, the age limit of 8, what to wear and bring, what is not allowed, and when it closes (Oct 2026).
The Caminito del Rey is not a hard walk: 7.7 km one way from the north entrance to El Chorro, in 3 to 4 hours, and the Caminito del Rey’s own site says you need to be only slightly in shape, not sporty. What stops people is the height, not the effort: the walkways are pinned to the gorge walls and the hanging bridge near the end is 105 metres up, and the site does not recommend the visit to anyone with vertigo. The rules are strict and checked at the gate: no children under 8, no walking sticks, no flip-flops, no big backpacks. On a guided tour the guide handles the ticket and the entry time; the white village tour adds a morning in Álora, rated 4.9 from 3,562 reviews and from US$73 a person in current promotion (usually US$80) (checked October 2026).

From the Caminito del Rey’s official FAQ and rules, read on 30 October 2026.
The walk itself is on boards and paths with railings, with some stairs but no climbing. The effort is the distance and the sun, and on a day tour the walking you do before it. On the white village tour the morning in Álora is on foot and uphill, and one guest found the two together a lot for one day.
The age limit and ID
Children under 8 cannot enter. Visitors from 8 to 17 must be with an adult and carry their ID card, passport or an equivalent document for the whole route, because the staff check it (decree 2026/3306 of the Diputación de Málaga, the rules in force in October 2026). The white village tour and its operator’s plain day trip also do not insure guests over 65: they can join with their own insurance and a signed form.
What to wear and bring
- Shoes: proper walking shoes; flip-flops and high heels are not allowed.
- Water and a snack: water or energy drinks, chocolate or energy bars, nuts and fruit are allowed. Water is not included on the white village tour.
- A small bag: bulky backpacks and big bags are not allowed.
- ID: for anyone under 18, and the tours ask adults for one too.
- The helmet: provided at the entrance and handed back at El Chorro.

What is not allowed
Walking sticks, hiking poles, crutches and canes; tripods and anything else that blocks the path; drones; animals, guide dogs included (the official FAQ: no pets, and no guide dogs because the harness is an obstacle on the narrow walkways in an evacuation); smoking and fires; and climbing over the fencing. Entry is only through the authorised gate, never along the railway tracks. Staff can send anyone who ignores the rules off the route (the Caminito del Rey’s rules).
When it is open, and when it closes
The Caminito is open Tuesday to Sunday: it is closed on Mondays apart from a few special ones each year, and on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. It opens at 9:00 and closes at 14:50 or 17:20 depending on the season, and groups enter every 10 minutes. The management closes it on rainy or very windy days, and closes the hanging bridge near the south exit in strong wind. Official tickets cannot be changed or refunded unless the management closes the route, for the weather, a landslide or any other reason: then, within four calendar days of the closure notice, the holder can either move the ticket to another date, subject to availability, or request a refund, both from their personal space on the official site (the official purchase conditions). Some tours promise a refund on a weather closure: LegacyTravel's day trip with Ardales lists a money-back guarantee, and the tours all carry free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Is it scary?
For most people, less than they expected: one guest, nervous of heights before the day, wrote that it was less frightening than feared, on an even surface and not strenuous. The guides keep the group moving, and you can stop for photos only where it is allowed. If a 105-metre bridge is a hard no, the walk is not for you; nothing on the route can be skipped once you are in.

Route length, times, rules, ages, closures and the helmet from the Caminito del Rey’s official site, its FAQ and its purchase conditions, and the public-use rules in decree 2026/3306 of 6 May 2026; tour inclusions from the GetYourGuide listings; guests’ comments from the newest 350 reviews of tour 537216; all read on 30 October 2026.
